What is time use data?
Time use data is increasingly relevant to development policy. This data shows how many minutes or hours individuals devote to activities such as paid work, unpaid work including household chores and childcare, leisure, and self-care activities.
What is the Atus?
The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) measures the amount of time people spend doing various activities, such as paid work, childcare, volunteering, and socializing.
How is the American Time Use Survey conducted?
The American Time Use Survey is a one-time only survey. Census Bureau interviewers conduct this survey only over the telephone. You will be asked to recall how you spent your time during the 24-hour period on the day before your interview. You will also be asked a few additional questions related to your time-use.
How is Atus data collected?
ATUS data are collected via telephone interviews. This part of the interview is used to collect a detailed account of the respondent’s activities, starting at 4 a.m. the previous day and ending at 4 a.m. on the interview day. For each activity reported, the interviewer asks how long the activity lasted.
