Can military retirees fly Space A?
Yes. Uniformed Services Retirees (receiving retirement pay and possessing a BLUE Retiree ID Card) and their accompanying dependents can travel Space-A anywhere that Space-A is allowed. In addition, “Gray Area” Retirees have limited eligibility (but not their dependents).
Is Space a travel still available?
As many in the military community know, Space-A has been restricted due to COVID-19 since March 2020, and as of this writing, it is still only an option for active duty on emergency leave and a few other specific cases. All other travelers require an Exception to Policy letter from an O-6 or higher.

Navy personnel traveling aboard any military organic or commercial contracted (chartered) aircraft may wear civilian clothing when traveling on regular/emergency leave or Space A travel. Personnel on PCS or TAD orders may travel in civilian clothing unless otherwise directed by cognizant authority.
Can spouses fly Space A?
In 2019, those veterans became eligible to fly Space-A on regularly scheduled military passenger aircraft, joining retirees and their spouses; National Guard and Reserve members on the Active Status List; and surviving spouses of those who died on active duty. Dependents cannot travel without the veteran sponsor.
Can veterans take hops?
Military hops are military aircraft that allow veterans and dependants on board. These flights are not a reliable means of travel. At any time, a flight’s operational status can change, causing cancellations and diverted flights.
