What is Asacol suppository?
Asacol Suppositories contain the active substance mesalazine (also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid) which is an anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of Ulcerative colitis – a disease of the large bowel (colon) and back passage (rectum) in which the lining of the bowel becomes inflamed (red and swollen).
What do mesalamine suppositories do?
Mesalamine suppositories are used to treat mild to moderate active ulcerative proctitis (inflammation of the rectum). Mesalamineenema is used to treat active mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, proctitis or proctosigmoiditis (inflammation of the rectum and bowel).
What is Asacol tablets used for?
This medication is used to treat a certain bowel disease (ulcerative colitis). It helps to reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain. Mesalamine belongs to a class of drugs known as aminosalicylates. It works by decreasing swelling in the colon.
How long does it take for mesalamine suppositories to work?
There is usually an improvement in 3 to 21 days. You may need about 6 weeks of treatment to get good results. This medicine can cause stains on things it touches. Therefore keep it away from clothing and other fabrics, flooring, painted surfaces, marble, granite, plastics, and enamel.

How long does Asacol take to work?
Asacol should start working in a few days, but the primary treatment lasts for about six weeks. Some people experienced a decrease in symptoms after three weeks. Sometimes Asacol is taken for about six months in order to prevent ulcerative colitis from returning.
